Growing up, I heavily relied on friends to keep me company after school and during the summer months. Being alone scared me and made me feel overwhelmed. If my friends were busy with family things or had plans with other friends, the day seemed to drag on and on.

Loneliness in college

Fast forward to my early college years and I experienced that same loneliness all over again. Learving my small town where I knew everyone, I roomed my first semester with a bestie. However, we had different schedules and different hobbies.

I knew that college involved a lot of drinking, but I didn’t expect most of my social interactions to be parties. I didn’t drink when I was underage, so I felt isolated. Being an introvert, I was fine with getting to know one new person, but a roomful of new people was too much for me. So, I avoided most invites to hang out with new friends.

A relationship with loneliness

For four years, I dated the same guy. He also had different plans and priorities. We broke up regularly, just to get back together when he found it convenient. Once I counted and we had broken up ten times.

EVENTUALLY, I realized that he wasn’t who I thought he was, but I scared to give up on the dreams we had planned together. And I was scared to get out of my comfort zone and date someone new.

Married and Lonely

Later, I met my husband!

He was stable. He was loving, encouraging and confident. Moreover, he was confident that I was the one and that we should be together.

I was used to guys who pursued me until I actually said “yes,” then they would become uninterested. Enjoyed the chase.

We were so excited to get married. And I was so excited to marry someone healthy and respectful. I didn’t even know what that was like, at least not for myself.

So, we got married, but then I still felt lonely. I wanted my husband to still be infatuated with me, but married life isn’t dating life. I had these expectations of compliments, affection, and 24/7 desire to do things together.

Life Changing Bible Verses for Loneliness

7 Life Changing Bible Verses for Loneliness

1. Bible Verses for feeling alone: 1 John 2:15-17

Do not love this world nor the things it offers you, for when you love the world, you do not have the love of the Father in you. For the world offers only a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions. These are not from the Father, but are from this world. And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever. 1 John 2:15-17 WEB

When I read about how we were not made for this world, but for heaven, it changes my perspective. I realize that not fitting in with those who were drinking in college is how I should feel.

I appreciate hardships on this side of heaven more, because I realize that if I didn’t have hardships I would totally love this world.

2. Life changing Bible Verses handling Loneliness: Parable of the Lost sheep

“What do you think? If a man has one hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine, go to the mountains, and seek that which has gone astray? If he finds it, most certainly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine which have not gone astray. Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish. Matthew 18:12-14 WEB

We have a God who is willing to leave all of His believers in safety to come after us.

3. Comforting Bible Verses for the Lonely: Hebrews 12:1

Therefore let’s also, seeing we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, lay aside every weight and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with perseverance the race that is set before us Hebrews 12:1 WEB

After committing to being in God’s Word every day, He provided me with a cloud of witnesses! I developed an awesome tribe of believing friends who I could talk about God’s love with and have deep conversations. People to have a deep connection with.

4. Psalm 34:17

The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. Psalm 34:17 WEB

I think it is awesome that God listens to our cries and answers our prayers. It might not be the answer we were praying for, but He always has our eternal happiness and destination in mind.

5. PHILIPPIANS 46:7

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 WEB

For those of us battling anxiety, I think we completely underestimate the Father’s love for us. We want to know how things are going to end, so we know everything will be ok.

BUT WE DO KNOW HOW IT ENDS… Jesus conquered death. In Him, we win!

6. 1 John 3:1

See how great a love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God! For this cause the world doesn’t know us, because it didn’t know him. 1 John 3:1 WEB

In college, I remember reading the Bible every night, which was a new routine for me. And one day, I was walking to class feeling so lonely and I remember this weird presence and feeling like Jesus was right next to me walking with me. I will never forget that. He is a sweet Savior.

He is right next to you too.

7. JOhn 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13 WEB

Jesus laid down His life for His friends. For me. For you…

God’s love is one of those things that you can’t explain very easily. Nothing on earth is as magnificent, so how do you explain it?

The awesome thing about us is that we were made to worship, so when someone isn’t worshiping God they aren’t filled spiritually. They know something is missing. In that void, we can share about Jesus and what He has done with His love in our life!
