1. Job Grieves
Job’s friends visit him in
And in great sorrow, they tore their clothes, then sprinkled dust on their heads and cried bitterly. For seven days and nights, they sat silently on the ground beside him, because they realized what terrible pain he was in. Job 2:12-13
How God uses Trials in our lives for His purpose.
2. Feeling Forgotten by God
David writes and sings this song in Psalms when he is fleeing King Saul. At the time, King Saul wanted to kill him out of jealousy. David has had to leave his family behind and seek shelter.
You are my mighty rock. Why have you forgotten me? Why must enemies mistreat me and make me sad? Even my bones are in pain, while all day long my enemies sneer and ask, “Where is your God?” Psalms 42:9-10
3. Feeling Abandoned
In these verses, Jesus is preparing his disciples for when He is gone, so that they may be comforted in His death.
I won’t leave you like orphans. I will come back to you. In a little while the people of this world won’t be able to see me, but you will see me. And because I live, you will live. John 14: 18-19
4. Comfort For the Grieving
Again, in these verses for grief, Jesus is preparing his disciples for when He is gone.
Jesus said to his disciples, “Don’t be worried! Have faith in God and have faith in me. There are many rooms in my Father’s house. I wouldn’t tell you this, unless it was true. I am going there to prepare a place for each of you. After I have done this, I will come back and take you with me. Then we will be together. You know the way to where I am going.” John 14:1-4
5. Jesus’ Plea
This verse for grief took place right before Jesus died for our sins on the cross.
He prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, don’t make me suffer by having me drink from this cup. But do what you want, and not what I want”. Matthew 26:39
6. God Is Always There
I’ve commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t ever be afraid or discouraged! I am the LORD your God, and I will be there to help you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9
This is God’s pep talk to Joshua as he becomes Israel’s leader. So, this was right after the death of their former leader, Moses.
7 & 8. The Future For God’s People
These next two verses for grief discuss the pain and groaning we will do as followers of Christ on earth, but how we will be set free! Romans is about Paul’s letters to the church at Rome. So here, Paul is proclaiming the Gospel to them.
I am sure that what we are suffering now cannot compare with the glory that will be shown to us. In fact, all creation is eagerly waiting for God to show who his children are. Romans 8:18-19
They are the ones God has chosen for his purpose, and he has always known who his chosen ones would be. He had decided to let them become like his own
Romans 8:28-30 is now my new favorite set of verses! I just love that God chose us so long ago and that everything He promises comes true! What a great reminder in these verses for grief.
9. Mighty Fortress
This verse is encouraging for when we forget the vast amount of power the LORD has with just the sound of His voice. No trouble is too big for Him. So, this song is David’s reminder to us.
God is our mighty fortress, always ready to help in times of trouble. And so, we won’t be afraid! Let the earth tremble and the mountains tumble into the deepest sea. Psalm 46:1-2
10. David’s Song
Even though David is being pursued by King Saul, he
You treat me to a feast, while my enemies watch. You honor me as your guest, and you fill my cup until it overflows. Your kindness and love will always be with me each day of my life. and I will live forever in your house, Lord. Psalms 23:5-6

Here, David writes this song to remind us that no matter what is going on in our lives, we can stop and praise God for His promises, provisions, and faithfulness!
12. Comforting Others
At this time, Paul is writing letters to the Christians in Corinth and giving thanks to God. So, this set of verses tells us that God gives us comfort through our trials so that we might be able to learn how to comfort others during their trials.
The Father is a merciful God, who always gives us comfort. He comforts us when we are in trouble, so that we can share that same comfort with others in trouble. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
If you have a friend who is going through a tough time, you can learn 6 easy ways of encouraging your friend here.
13. Moses’ Mission
I will bring my people out of Egypt into a country where there is good land, rich with milk and honey. Exodus 3:8
The verse takes place when the Israelites were slaves in Egypt and God heard their cries for help. So, He swooped in and led them to a land of their own.
14. We Rise Again!
We often suffer, but we are never crushed. Even when we don’t know what to do, we never give up. In times of trouble, God is with us, and when we are knocked down, we get up again. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9
So at this time, the Christians in Corinth were disappointed by the fact that Paul hadn’t come to visit them. So, here Paul is encouraging the church of Corinth. He reminds them of God’s generosity.
